I don't hate Riley with the burning passion that everyone else seems to, due to the fact that I seem to be paralysed with not caring. Dawn honestly bugs me more in this season and the next. (However, I must state that Connor pwns them both and Vincent Kartheiser can act rings around Blucas and Trachtenberg.)
Buffy/Riley sex scene
You know what I hate? Watching two people with less than zero chemistry having sex. I always imagine Spike's look of frustration outside is due to the better job he knows he could be doing.
I do love when he's all "HIT MEH BUFFY" and she walks away. PWNED.
I think Buffy's refusal to hit him pinpoints exactly what is missing from their relationship. While I believe that Buffy did love him (though was never *in* love with him), they're just not equals. In contrast, how many times has Buffy just struck at Spike without even thinking - no holding back. That's what Riley wants - unbridled passion.
Xander makes a good point but I think it has more to do with his relationship with Anya than it does for Buffy and Riley.
I see a lot of people being furious with Xander for his lecture here, suggesting that he's trying to live vicariously through Riley. I think you're right in this - Xander identifies with Buffy here, not Riley, and is frustrated with her for not succeeding where he fails (with Anya). Which is also unfair, but in a different sort of way.
Good riddance, buddy.
Unfortunately, he makes a return in S6. *stabs 'As You Were'* I'm not crazy about B/R obviously, but I do think their break-up was very realistic and well-written.
